We have found that there are hundreds of small rural communities throughout the UK who have already established a trusting and friendly relationship with one another. For these communities, easyCar Club is a no-brainer. We deal with the technical side of insurance and payment authorisation, so that our members need only to think about the rental itself.
As easyCar Club grows, we pride ourselves on being involved in communities all across the country. We may have started in London, but since we went national this year, we have gained members from Land’s End to John O’Groats, from Swansea to Lowestoft. We have found that there are hundreds of small rural communities throughout the UK who have already established a trusting and friendly relationship with one another. For these communities, easyCar Club is a no-brainer. We deal with the technical side of insurance and payment authorisation, so that our members need only to think about the rental itself.

When Ingrid, heard about us on the radio, she was somewhat doubtful that her car would get any rentals. Living in Crowthorne, a village located just South of Reading, she believed that there would not be enough demand for her car. However, since easyCar Club is completely free to join, she decided to give it a go anyway.

To improve her chances of getting a rental, she referred to the welcome pack that we provide to all of our new Owners, which included stickers to apply to her car and advice on the best ways to let local people know that her car is available to rent.

It wasn't long before Ingrid got a request for a 2-week rental. She accepted the request as soon as she could, and set to work preparing her car. Ingrid was aware that first impressions count, and that this first rental was the most important way to establish her reputation within easyCar Club. When the Driver arrived to pick up her Honda Jazz, she demonstrated all of its features and its quirks to ensure that he would get the best of the car. Ingrid’s efforts definitely paid off: she not only received a five-star review, but the Driver went on to make another booking with her a few weeks later. Ingrid has been able to use the money that she has earned through the site to fund the entertainment of her children over the Summer holiday period. Luckily, she’s also covered for Christmas, as she has an upcoming booking which will earn her almost £200 in just one rental.

Her advice to fellow Owners is to take advantage of the ‘Market Value’ option, which sets her rental price at one which remains competitive with industry rates. Ingrid chose this option in order to encourage bookings and reviews from the outset, which helps to establish her in the community as a trusted Owner. Ingrid also allows her car to be booked instantly, which saves Drivers the time it takes to wait for a response.

At easyCar Club, we believe that a sense of community can be just as important as the financial gains of being a member. There are some members of the community who truly go above and beyond, who are happy not only to promote themselves within the community but also to promote their community as a whole.
A few months ago, we introduced you to Aminur, an early-adopter who had been successfully renting his Ford Focus out to members of our community, and who seemed to have his eye out for a new car. Well, I checked back with him this week to see how things are going, and am delighted to say that he’s gone from strength to strength.

You might be asking what we mean by this, how could Aminur possibly have improved on what seemed to already be an ideal position in the easyCar Club? Well, he did it by doubling his assets. Shortly after his first chat with us, he bought a new car and immediately put it up on the site. Since then, he hasn’t looked back. Having two cars can be financially straining in this day and age, with many families needing to cut down to one in order to afford it. Aminur doesn’t have that problem; his car costs are so largely offset by the money he makes from easyCar Club, over £1,200 so far, that two cars don’t even make him break a sweat.

“My experience being an Owner has been really good so far. I meet Drivers face to face so that I can get to know them and can form a friendship.” Although presented with the option of a key safe, Aminur prefers to hand over the keys in person. Doing so encourages trust, but it also allows him to develop friendly relationships with regular renters. Like any great entrepreneur, Aminur understands the importance of customer retention. Sure, it’s great to be getting new Drivers renting from him every week, but it’s also extremely rewarding to have developed a reliable and trustworthy customer-base. He fondly recalls an occasion where a Driver had brought her bike, and had nowhere to put it for the night. In true Sharing Economy spirit, he offered up his house as a temporary storage facility, an offer she was glad to take up!

When I traveled to east London to have a chat with him about his experience as an easyCar Club Owner, he was nice enough to pick me up from the station, and to drop me off when I’d finished taking photos of him and his pristine cars. When I fervently thanked him for the lift, he told me that it was no problem, and that he’s often happy to give his Drivers a lift to where they need to go as well.

Interaction within a community like ours is key to success, but Aminur does not rest on his laurels when it comes to delivering an impressive and competitive product. Both of his cars are fully kitted out with gadgets and gizmos to impress techies and casual drivers alike. His Ford Focus comes with a sat-nav which updates every minute with information on traffic, accidents and road-works, changing route information to ensure you have a pleasant and speedy drive. His Ford Fiesta is even more technologically advanced, with voice recognition which lets you control everything from incoming calls to the car’s air conditioning.

In Aminur, we find not just a budding entrepreneur, but also somebody who genuinely cares about his Drivers at a very human level. It’s great owners like him who are encouraging people all over the country to shun conventional car hiring in favour of easyCar Club.

We asked him what he plans to spend his extra income on, can anyone guess what he said? That’s right, he’s planning on buying a third car. This time, he has a Polo in mind and judging from his current cars, this one will presumably have hover technology and a flux capacitor! Or, at the very least, a USB charger.

Richard, our easyCar Club Hero, is certainly no stranger to peer-to-peer communities. As an early adapter to the internet and an IT expert, Richard has always been one step ahead of other consumers when it comes to new and exciting online ideas.
In the early 2000s, he began compiling a list of bookmarks titled ‘Sharing Economy’ – beginning with such websites as Zopa – so that he could track their progress and their success. Once adequate research had been done, Richard would sign up and get sharing. He is now a proud renter of his parking space (thanks to JustPark), his own house (via Airbnb) and, of course, his Ford Focus with easyCar Club. Richard often receives simultaneous bookings with all three websites over the weekends, and he even offers on his Airbnb deal whereby renters can both stay at his house and drive his car around for the period.

It’s great to see such involvement in a new, fast-growing economy, and its even better to see just how successful he has been. He’s had 7 bookings since he joined up this year, and already has more lined up for the future. Not just that, he has also had repeat rentals and maintains a 5-star average rating on the site. He’s full of advice for other Owners, with the key piece of advice being a focus upon embracing the community. Since he often works from home, Richard chooses to hand over the keys in person. This is something which he says is helpful as it not only reminds the Renter that they are renting a personal car but it also allows him to establish a friendly relationship with his Renters, encouraging repeat rentals.

But embracing the community doesn't just help with current bookings – it also helps him to secure future bookings and to allow members of his online community to get involved in the Sharing Economy. When he has had a good rental experience, or when he’s achieved a triple whammy weekend (simultaneous Airbnb, JustPark and easyCar Club bookings), he tweets about it to all of his followers. In this way, Richard truly understands the ‘Sharing’ nature of the Sharing Economy – that it is driven by community and is best spread by word-of-mouth.

As a forward-thinker who demonstrates the virtues in providing a fantastic car at a competitive price and in engaging with communities both online and offline, we’re proud to add Richard to our roster of easyCar Club Heroes.

There are a number of reasons for joining easyCar Club as an Owner: there’s the opportunity to engage in one’s local community, to earn a little money from a car that gets little use and a passion for a greener form of transport.
Michael joined in the hopes that he could offset the costs of his car ownership, but also wanted to become part of what he calls ‘the greenest form of motoring’.

11 months later, and Michael has certainly seen the financial results of joining easyCar Club. He has rented his car to around 30 of our Drivers, bringing him an additional income of around £1100. He only uses the car two or three times a week, so he ensures that his availability is set in advance to cater to his needs. He uses the money that he earns to reduce the cost of car ownership, so he still gets as much use of the car as he would have before, whilst having to pay considerably less for the pleasure.

He says that easyCar Club differed from his expectations due to how little effort it required. The process is seamless from start to finish, meaning that our Members spend less time doing administrative work and more time enjoying the benefits of peer-to-peer lending! He sees peer-to-peer lending on the whole as ‘the green affordable way forward for anything we own and don’t use all the time.’ We find that many of our Members join partly due to an ethical choice to help the environment and to reduce waste, and the financial incentive makes the process even sweeter! His advice to anybody considering joining easyCar Club? ‘Just do it.’

Ever since we went national, car Owners and Drivers have been signing up to easyCar Club all across the UK. This is great news for everyone; as easyCar Club communities grow, more and more people are saving money and interacting in a positive sharing economy.
Philip signed up with easyCar Club when he lived in London, partly due to the fact that he often used the tube more than he drove his car. When he moved to Sheffield, he decided to stay on as an Owner, adjusting his location and availability to suit him. Philip says of his first rental experience that it was ‘a bit nerve wracking initially but the thorough checks done by the club reassured me.’ He said that Andrew, his first Driver, was ‘a straight up guy who just wanted the car for visiting family over the holidays.’ Of course, Philip’s car came back safe and sound. Andrew also enjoyed the experience, giving Philip a five star review and calling the car ‘a nice drive!’

Philip’s goes into more detail, describing his car as ‘a great little runaround that is economical and well-cared for’, but that is not all that he has to offer. Inside the car, you’ll find a googly-eyed spider that started its life as an air freshener and which now serves as a good-luck mascot to Philip’s Peugeot. Judging by how smoothly his experience with easyCar Club has been, it seems to be working!

Philip believes that easyCar Club is a great idea for any car owners who don’t get a lot of use from their car, as they can not only help others out but they can also make some money too. In order to emulate Philip’s success, he recommends that you keep your car clean and in good condition, and that you maintain friendly and informative communication before, during and after the rental period.

Renting a car through easyCar Club generally throws up a surprise for our members, and we find it’s the same surprise every time – it’s just so easy.
We do try to prep everyone (we even use ‘easy’ in the first part of our name!), but it’s still difficult to imagine that your car can go from being a permanent fixture in the garage to a money-earning, community-building asset.

Mark has been an easyCar Club member now for just over three months. His time with us has been, on the whole, uneventful. He has coolly earned a tidy sum of £285, which is made all the sweeter by the fact that his car would not normally be in use.

In one instance, a booking came while he was playing tennis and Mark hurried home to meet the Driver. The Driver was very grateful, and the booking took place without any hitch, but he has since changed his car availability to “available on request” in order to avoid having to prepare his car at short notice.

Being an easyCar Club Owner means that Mark is able to off-set the cost of car ownership. The additional income goes toward paying for car insurance, maintenance, parking, road tax, and fuel.

To Mark, trust has been the most important part of being an Owner. He willingly allows the Club’s vetted members to drive off in his Mercedes, an initially unusual experience for all our Owners. It is this underlying principle of trust which is the key to any peer-to-peer system. Fortunately, easyCar Club is composed of great members, trustworthy, friendly and supportive of a communal cause.

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a superhero? Or even played around with the idea of being the person in charge of a combat-ready, battle hardened robot that is a force for justice throughout the galaxy? Well to some extent, this is all part of a normal day for Aleh.
For those who have not tried it, allowing your car to be hired by a stranger may suggest you don’t care much for your vehicle. Don’t be fooled, our Owners are very fond of their cars or vans. Most sign up to easyCar Club because they find they don’t use their cars often. For our Owners, easyCar Club presents an option for the car to be used in the way it was intended, serving the local community and benefitting the Owner by bringing in additional income.

Aleh is an easyCar Club Owner and his car is a Renault Scenic. When you visit Aleh’s Owner profile and view the photos of his car, you’ll see he has taken the time to show the various positions in which the seats can be arranged depending on what load needs to be carried – nine in total! Aleh explains that, because his Scenic can be transformed into a big mini van from family car, he felt it was only fitting to name his car after the leader of the Transformers, Optimus Prime. You can even see the Autobots emblem on the bonnet of his Scenic.

Optimus Prime has only been available to hire for about a month and he has already helped a newborn child meet his grandparents in Oxfordshire for the first time. This is no doubt the first of many good deeds the leader of the Autobots will play a part in over the coming weeks and months. Aleh has found demand has been greater than expected. His first rental came on the second day his car was listed, and there are plenty of easyCar Club members in his local area who intend to hire Optimus a number of times.

While Optimus is out righting wrongs for the community, Aleh will be travelling to work by bicycle or on public transport. Every now and then, on his day off, Optimus will be available to Aleh for a trip to the seaside or a countryside retreat giving both machine and Owner a well-earned break.

Few things change your life as dramatically as the birth of your first child. These changes can be far reaching, and in some cases, entirely unexpected. Thankfully, there are a few changes you can prepare for. Like many couples, Scott and his partner decided that buying a small family car would be a prudent decision.
Public transport isn't ideal for a new-born, and not always ideal for a toddler, so a car would be an investment they would benefit from for many years.

As it turned out, they found they rarely used the car. Rather than looking out their living room window at their car depreciating outside, they decided to see if easyCar Club could bring in “a little bit of pocket money”.

Scott’s car has been listed for a few months, and has already earned “a few hundred pounds”. It is never easy for a first time parent. It’s a steep learning curve and raising a child requires a lot of attention. Thankfully, Scott has found that being an easyCar Club Owner is very easy.

Always planning for the future, Scott will be using the additional income his Audi A3 brings in via easyCar Club to save for a deposit on a house. We all wish Scott and his young family the best of luck for the future!

This week’s Hero is Terry and he will be the first to tell you that he is passionate about the concept of peer-to-peer. According to Terry it increases competition, with the potential of making the traditional business models think again.
He also believes peer-to-peer can make society more efficient, which would ultimately have a positive impact on the environment.

And there was another reason Terry joined easyCar Club that is even more familiar to us. He was just tired of seeing his car go unused, day in and day out it was just sitting on the drive doing nothing.

After joining easyCar Club, Terry decided to adjust the price of his car so it would be a competitive and attractive option. Although this would mean he would not make the most money for each booking, it has also meant he has benefited from more bookings; resulting in a nice sum of money. Over a period of about four weeks he has earned £226 with a further £160 expected in bookings soon. Terry says he could probably accommodate even more, so he is keen to get the word out about peer-to-peer rental. Our flyers and stickers that are available to Owners free of charge will be able to help him build a presence in his local community.

As an additional positive, Terry has had no horror stories, quirks or funny anecdotes. All those who have booked his car have been “decent people” and of course he would like for this to continue.

What is interesting is Terry’s choice of car, or perhaps to be more specific, the decision-making process that led him to settle on his Honda CR-V. While a number of people look for the fastest or most powerful vehicle, what Terry was drawn to was the number of reviews saying the car was ‘boring’. It wasn’t dramatic in anyway, it didn’t accelerate like lightning, instead it was fuel efficient and had a great deal of space, perfect!

One of Terry’s favourite features of the easyCar Club service is ‘text and email messaging’. It’s a feature he says we should make a bigger deal of as it has helped him feel really in the loop. This of course is important when your car is with someone who you may not even have met in person.

While a portion of his earnings is going towards the running and maintenance of his car, there is also enough to put towards a holiday. What could be better than guilt free holiday spending money?

Many of our Owners find that they don’t need their car much during the week as they commute to work Monday to Friday on public transport. This means their car can be out on the road with someone else, bringing in an additional income while the Owner is out earning too. Rob does things the other way around, he finds that he uses his car most during the normal working week with little four-wheeled activity at the weekend.
Rather than look at the car as it sits on his driveway, he decided to give easyCar Club a try. Since March, he has earned just over £160 and his experience as an Owner has been on the whole “great”. Everyone who has rented his Toyota Aygo has returned it with a full tank of petrol and has taken great care of it.

One of the main differences between what Rob expected of being an easyCar Club Owner and reality is that it has been “really hassle free”. He highlights the Key Safe as being a feature that really facilitates ease of use for both the Owner and Driver, so much so that he doesn’t even need to be at home when the car has been booked. Rob has become so fond of the Key Safe that it is his top tip for new Owners, along with keeping your car clean. A trusty hand vacuum usually does the trick and is a lot cheaper than paying for a professional service!

With the extra funds coming in Rob is planning a road trip to the Nürburgring in Germany. We suspect it will be an adventure that his Toyota Aygo won’t be playing a part in.

Our Owners come from all walks of life and find out about us from a variety of different sources. It may be from an article in a magazine or newspaper, sometimes it’s through word-of-mouth or it can even be a mention on social media.
Emily came to us as her mum is an avid listener to Radio 4. Having heard about easyCar Club’s offering, Emily’s mother decided that it was something her daughter should take part in. At the time Emily was working in central London, commuting daily and getting very little use from her Fiat Punto. Never one to ignore her mother’s advice and always open to new opportunities Emily decided that the easyCar Club proposition was a good idea, “what a great way to earn a little extra without having to do much” and the additional income would make living in London all the more manageable.

In just over six weeks, Emily has earned £200! Being an Owner has been a thoroughly pleasant experience and Emily has had no qualms about lending her car out as all the Drivers have been lovely.

Having had such a consistently positive experience means that Emily would recommend the service to anyone considering giving it a try. It has been an economical scheme for both Owners and Drivers and means that as a young professional she can look forward to spending a bit of money at the weekend without any guilt!

Sylvia enjoys cycling, it can be a great way to get around during the summer months, especially when you don’t have too far to travel and you don’t need to carry a heavy load. When the sun is shining and a nice breeze is blowing, a gentle ride can be very calming and give you a connection with your city that is completely different to any other mode of transport.
Of course, the weather isn't always great. Heavy rain, strong winds and generally inclemency can often beset our fair British Isles. Even when that isn’t the case, sometimes you just have a few more miles to travel than pedal power alone can carry you. Fortunately, when her trusty bicycle isn’t up to the task at hand, Sylvia has her car to call upon. Her Toyota Prius is a reliable complement to her life and remains a worthwhile investment.

In an effort to pay off the car more quickly and because it is often sat idle while she is out on two wheels, Sylvia decided to join easyCar Club. Since joining in January she has found that the car is booked between 70% and 90% of the time that she has made it available, not a bad ratio at all!

She has also found that some requests come in at very short notice. Wherever possible Sylvia will try to accept but on occasion she will have to refuse a rental request. Like all our Owners, she appreciates that plans can change quickly and will always do her best to help but adds that it is always better when Drivers book well in advance of any event they have.

What has been very reassuring is that she has always had her Toyota Prius returned with a full tank and in a clean state. This appears to be a shared experience for the vast majority of our Owners. This level of consideration and respect is part of what makes the sharing economy so special and something we’re proud to be a part of.

We do love it when there is an interesting little story behind the car owned by our easyCar Club members. Most of them are very sweet, and we feel this particular story typifies the sort of sentiment that inspires many of our Owners when it comes to car ownership and being an easyCar Club member.
Chris is a proud father and a humble guy. When chatting to him he revealed that the reason he bought a Seat Leon is because he named his son Leon. No doubt there are a few Mercedes and Porsches who are the apple of their father’s eye, but there is something about buying a car that has the same name as your child, rather than naming your child after a high-end car, that is heart-warming.

Chris bought the Seat Leon brand new and as he intends the car to be a future birthday present for his son, he doesn’t even use it much, so the mileage is low. It was because the car had been so regularly sat on his drive that Chris sought-out a way to put it to good use before his son’s coming of age. He decided easyCar Club was a safe way to make a little money and has so far found the experience of being an Owner – “easy”.

Perhaps Chris’s favourite feature is the option to make use of the Key Safe provided, as this means that the whole process has been easier than he expected – effectively he doesn’t even need to meet Drivers unless he wants to. As such, his advice to anyone considering joining easyCar Club is to “just do it” – a phrase we’ve heard before and is definitely quite catchy.

And what is Chris planning to do with the extra money he is earning? Well, as expected of the family man, he is thinking about his son’s future and putting it all towards university fees. close
